What was Glenn’s Singapore Experience like?

"It was interesting to see how a school in a different country functions. Singapore has an educational system that is different from that of Britain’s and it was interesting to see how that works. The students are streamed at the end of primary six, and how the system helps them to get into the right stream for their academic ability.

The hawker centres may be ordinary to you, but they are extraordinary to us! To eat such a variety of foods, with people from the different cultures and nations eating around you, it’s like the UN at a meal table.

The mix of culture in Singapore is very stimulating… it was interesting to see people from all over the world living together harmoniously.

Come here to see things, and taste things, and smell smells that you won't experience at home. And… everything here works!"

Glenn's visit

Glenn’s strong interest in the area of Information Technology & Digital Media definitely brought him to the right place. He and his wife Cordelia had a very fruitful meeting with Professor Lye Kin Mun, Deputy Executive Director of the Institute of Infocomm Research, one of the seven research institutes of A*STAR, the Agency for Science, Technology and Research that oversees key areas of public research. The Myers were given a comprehensive overview of the developments in R&D by Prof Lye and a few of his scientist colleagues, as well as a tour of ongoing IT and Digital Media research. They also visited STAR home, a mockup display giving a futuristic glimpse into how homes of the future might look like, with gadgets and technology used to make life easier and more fun.

Cordelia Myers is a secondary school mathematics teacher in Cambridge, who has written examination papers for the Cambridge school examinations in Singapore. For her, the highlight of the trip was a personalised and enriching session at Beatty Secondary School. There, they had the opportunity to get an in-depth introduction to Singapore’s education system conducted by the school’s Vice Principal, Mr Timothy Cheng. The school’s Head of Department for Mathematics, Mr Ng Tong Chuen, gave valuable insights into some of the innovative teaching methods for mathematics adopted in Singapore schools which Cordelia said she would certainly try out back in Cambridge.
